Have fun with music !

I’ve been teaching music for the past 20 years and I have learned a lot along the way. One of the main take-aways from all those years of teaching is the conviction that music instruction has to be as playful as possible. I know that many of us still carry childhood trauma’s from the way music was taught traditionally. A very effective way to achieve this playful tutoring is to never impose any lesson material or technique on the student, but to let the he/she ( or they) lead the way. The student sets the pace and also decides on most of the material (songs) that will be done.

With the more advanced students I usually make a plan/schedule and then work towards achieving the goals set. This can be anything from scales, overcoming a technical hurdle, learning a tricky song or composing and recording a track.

My teaching philosophy

The internet has brought about drastic changes in musical education. When searching the internet we are often bombarded with (usually incorrect) information which leaves us feeling overwhelmed. The filtering through this data overload is where a good teacher comes in. He or she must help the student decide what’s suitable at each stage of the musical learning progress, while getting rid of the proverbial noise. Furthermore, learning from the internet is usually a one way process without any feedback. Constructive musical guidance has to be a two way process where feedback has to be given from a teacher to the student at all times. This is especially important for beginners with whom bad habits are quickly acquired.

When guitar playing is the discipline being learned, this information overload problem is also enhanced by the many styles of guitar playing that exist. Many styles of musical ( e.g., blues, rock and flamenco) revolve around the guitar. This is because it has always been a relatively cheap and portable instrument, ideal for accompanying singers and travel. A direct consequence of this is that both the guitar and the technique used to play the guitar has evolved in a variety of ways. It is therefore strongly advisable to have professional guidance when learning the instrument.
